Ho, Ghana – February 19, 2025 – The Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) has issued an urgent warning to communities relying on the Tordze River after agrochemicals spilled into the waterway following a truck accident in Tove, Togo. The spill, which occurred on February 18, 2025, has raised concerns about water contamination and public health risks.
Authorities emphasize the need for a thorough assessment of the contamination level in the Tordze River and its adjoining water bodies in Ghana before declaring them safe for any human activity, including fishing.
In response to the incident, the VRCC is advising residents and communities in the Agortime-Ziope District and other downstream areas to refrain from using water from the river for drinking, fishing, irrigation, or washing until further notice.
Municipal and District Assemblies in affected areas have been directed to provide alternative water sources to ensure the safety of residents until the situation is resolved.
The VRCC has also urged the public and the media to help disseminate this warning to prevent potential health hazards.
For further updates, residents are advised to follow official announcements from the Volta Regional Coordinating Council.
