Mepe, Volta Region – North Tongu Flood Victims Association has issued a strong warning against alleged attempts by certain individuals to hijack compensation funds meant for flood victims following the Akosombo Dam spillage disaster.
At a press conference held in Mepe, Chairman and Spokesperson Mr Godson Hlordzi addressed the media, expressing grave concerns over what he described as a coordinated effort by unnamed key individuals to take control of the GH₵220 million compensation package announced by the government.
“We have observed that some individuals are lobbying for the compensation due us the real victims to be redirected into their hands. We are not aware of who they are, and we have never held any meetings or negotiations with them,” Mr. Hlordzi said.
He reaffirmed that the Tongu Flood Victims Association remains the legitimate body representing the flood-affected communities and should be the only entity involved in the compensation process on behalf of victims.
Mr Hlordzi also accused some previous local authorities and state actors of mismanaging donated relief funds and items, resulting in many victims being neglected. He emphasized that corruption and favouritism marred the earlier distribution of resources.
“Our call today is for President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress government to urgently direct the selected committee overseeing the compensation to disburse the funds transparently. Let the money go directly into victims’ bank accounts, not through traditional leaders or political intermediaries,” he stated.
He further urged the government to allow all verified victims to submit their bank details for direct deposit of their compensation, to prevent the recurrence of what he termed as “high-profile corrupt practices” that undermined previous philanthropic donations.
The Association insists that this approach is the only way to restore trust and ensure fairness in helping communities still reeling from the devastating effects of the Akosombo Dam spillage.
