Both the Minority and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin have been encouraged by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to abide by the recent Supreme Court decision concerning four parliamentary seats that the Speaker had earlier declared empty.
On October 17, Speaker Bagbin announced that four members of Parliament were no longer in office: Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central). This sparked a contentious discussion in the House.
In order to reinstate the impacted MPs, Afenyo-Markin petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the Speaker’s decision.
His plea emphasized the NPP’s will to settle conflicts in a “peaceful and lawful” manner in the face of increased legislative tensions.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo headed a Supreme Court bench that essentially overturned the Speaker’s judgment on Tuesday, November 12, by deciding in favor of Afenyo-Markin’s petition.
Speaking to the media following the decision, Afenyo-Markin emphasized how crucial it is for Ghana’s government structure to uphold democratic values, respect for one another, and the rule of law.Travel packages
He urged all sides to support these principles in order to maintain the integrity and stability of the legislative process.
“Democracy requires decency, and that is the path that the NPP took. We expect our colleagues from the other side and the Speaker to respect the decision of the court. Ghana shines in the eyes of Africans and we must hold that dearly.
“We should all respect the decision. All we want is peace in the country and that is what we chose and that is what we got.”
