The Supreme Court is expected to render a definitive decision on Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant before the next session of Parliament, according to Second Deputy Majority Whip Alex Tetteh Djornobuah.
In the previous sitting, both NPP and NDC MPs claimed majority status and occupied the majority side, which led to an NPP boycott of proceedings. Djornobuah thinks that this ruling would avoid a recurrence of that situation.
The Supreme Court halted the Speaker’s decision to declare the seats empty, which is what started the debate. The Minority nevertheless maintains their majority position in Parliament in spite of this.
The Majority has called for a recall of Parliament, claiming that the issue is impeding important government business by suspending legislative sessions.
The MP for Sefwi-Akontombra stated in an interview with Citi Eyewitness News that he is certain the Supreme Court would provide a final ruling soon, settling the issue of the vacant seats and maybe reducing tensions in Parliament.
“The court process will start from Friday, and if you look at the order from the Supreme Court, it ordered the Speaker and the Parliament as an institution to respond to the order.
“And we believe that before the 7 days will elapse, the court will do justice to whatever the NDC is claiming. We cannot force the court, but we’re praying that they will do deal with the matter as soon as practicable”.
