The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has announced the appointment of Mr. Carruthers Tetteh, a visually impaired lawyer, as a lecturer at the Faculty of Law.
Mr. Tetteh, who assumed his role in December 2023, is responsible for teaching Criminal Law and the Ghana Legal System.
Despite losing his sight at the age of 11 due to a drug reaction, Mr. Tetteh remained steadfast in his pursuit of a career in law.
Beginning his education at the Akropong School for the Blind, he later transitioned into mainstream education during junior high school and continued his studies at Okuapeman Senior High School.
Undeterred by the challenges posed by his visual impairment, Mr. Tetteh excelled academically, graduating with first-class honors in English and History from the University of Cape Coast in 2015. His determination led him to undertake the Bachelor of Laws program at UCC, where he graduated with another first-class degree.
Mr. Tetteh acknowledged the impact of losing his sight in 2002 but emphasized that it did not deter him from pursuing his dreams. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “Life had really taken a different turn because I am now going to be in the midst of people who are blind.”
Mr. Tetteh’s deep knowledge of Criminal Law and his passion for advocating for the less privileged were evident in his inaugural lecture at UCC. Despite facing adversity, he expressed his lifelong interest in law and the determination to set the right pace as the first visually impaired student admitted to the Law Faculty.
Having faced setbacks, including a failed entrance examination in 2019, Mr. Tetteh remained undeterred. Embracing discipline and consistency, he gained admission to the Ghana Law School in 2020, eventually being called to the Ghana Bar in 2022.
Recently, he added another accomplishment to his list, graduating with a Master of Laws in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) from the University of Ghana in 2023.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Mr. Tetteh is an active member of Northgate Baptist Church in Winneba, where he serves as an organist, further showcasing his dedication and contributions to both education and community life.
