Observance of Covid-19 safety protocols remains a widespread challenge in Eastern Region. Though officials at some centres are complying with the new directive to keep 150 applicants per centre at a time, others are hardly able to control the numbers.
It has been discovered that the Electoral Commission (EC) has failed to adhere to the said protocols; hence commuter in the Region have accused them of reneging on assurances that COVID-19 safety protocols would be observed during the on-going voter registration.
Bryt FM understands that the wearing of face masks is being strictly enforced upon entry at registration centres but social distancing and washing of hands are not being observed particularly in the Eastern Region.
The Electoral Commission upon all the assurances that they will ensure the observance of COVID-19 safety protocols has lost total control over the process.
Speaking to some of the registrants they said, “From the beginning of the exercise, we have witnessed complete disregard for COVID-19 safety protocols. While we observed that the wearing of face masks is being strictly enforced upon entry at the registration centre, social distancing and washing of hands are not being observed” they said.
It is worrying that there is some level of laxity with respect for the COVID-19 health and safety protocols, particularly the lack of social distancing at some registration centres.
Though the EC and security agencies have rolled out measures to make sure people obey preventive etiquette at the various registration centres, we encourage them to step up these measures.
“You have a personal responsibility to ensure that you observe social distancing no matter the excuse or no matter the desire whether it is to register or to do something else, you must wear the masks. So while we acknowledge that some are complying, the EC, the Police and some citizens are doing their best, we think that a lot more needs to be done,” a registrant advised.
