Cocoa farmers at Sapongso No.2 in the Wassa East district of the western region are wailing that they never benefited from the cocoa mass spraying exercise for the 2021 cocoa year.
Mr Edward Sosu, who is the farmers’ cooperative secretary in the area admitted that COCOBOD indeed released all the chemicals and the Spraying machines through the Wassa East district Agric officer to be used for the mass Spraying exercise.
However, the chief farmer at Sapongso No.2 Solomon Mokere and the Mass spraying Supervisor Emmanuel Sosu confiscated and used the chemicals on their own farms and that of their loved ones only ignoring hundreds of cocoa farmers in the area.
The aggrieved cocoa farmers cried that, due to the situation, they could not produce enough quantity and quality cocoa beans in 2021 relative to the previous years where they enjoyed the Spraying.
They have therefore called on COCOBOD to intervene with immediate effect to investigate where and how Solomon Mokere and Emmanuel Sosu the chief farmer and the Mass spraying Supervisor applied the chemicals.
Meanwhile the chief farmer, Solomon Mokere has refuted the allegation levelled against him and made a counter allegation against the former chief farmer for unlawful sales of petrol meant for mass spraying exercise to chainsaw operators without accounting for it.
