On Friday, October 27, 2023, Deputy Lands and Natural Resources Minister George Mireku Duker, together with some Inspectors of the Minerals Commission, embarked on a working visit to Gan He Mining Company Limited in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipal, Western Region.
The visit, purposely, was to familiarize himself with the operations of the mine and ascertain the progress of the company since it started operations in 2019.
Upon engagement with management, it was reported that the mine has not been in full operation due to inefficiencies in their operational permits and some financial constraints.
Again, the company lacked certified technical and qualified officers for various specified jobs in the company, putting the safety of workers and the neighbouring communities at risk.
Acting on the Minerals and Mining Laws, Act 703, and relevant provisions of L. I. 2182 among others, the deputy minister directed the Mine be closed down until all requirements have been met as enshrined by the mining regulations of Ghana.
Further, he tasked the management to form synergies with investors to fully operationalize the mine as successful operations of the company will have a direct impact on the socioeconomic growth of the municipality.
“I tasked the MCE, Wassa Amenfi East Municipal, Hon. Frederick Korankye, who was in my company, to assist Gan He to operate in a peaceful environment” the minister stated.
He again assured the management of the government’s commitment towards the success of Gan He and other Mining Firms.
