The Sumankwahene of Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, Nana Agyei Fenah II, has warned illegal chainsaw operators to stop depleting the traditional forest reserves or face the wrath of their wrath.
The traditional leader said authorities have made efforts to protect the forest but were distracted by chainsaw operators, a situation he describes has been a headache in the area.
He also emphasized the activities of the illegal lumbering saying, they had caused more damage to the environment as more trees were required to be planted to save the vegetation cover.
The Chief disclosed this when the Western Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission toured Wassa Amenfi to inspect trees planted last year in August.
The tour was also to inspect nursery sites in the area and to ascertain the preparedness of the Chiefs and the residents ahead of the Nationwide Green Ghana Project.
The Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area has targeted 150,000 tree planting projects this year to support the government’s Green Ghana Projects.
The Sumankwahene revealed that the tree planting project is under the auspices of Wassa Amenfi Paramount Chief, Tetreete Okuamoah Sekyim (II) with support from a private timber company namely AA Bonk limited.
The Chief assured the Commission of the readiness of the Traditional Council to make sure that the residents exceed the limit this year.
On his part, the Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Range Manager of the Forestry Commission, Mr Stephen Anane, commended Tetreete Okuamoah Sekyim and AA Bonk limited for the initiative and assured that the Amenfi East Forestry Commission were prepared to ensure the success of the project.
He added the Forestry Commission is set to plant about twenty million different species of trees across the country starting from the 10th June 2022.
Mr. Stephen Anane urged the youth and corporate entities to emulate the Paramount Chief of Wassa Amenfi to make tree planting a daily activity to fight climate change.
