Accra, January 15, 2025 – The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has announced a revised timeline for its planned offshore pipeline cleaning and inspection exercise, commonly referred to as “pigging.” Initially scheduled for January 20, 2025, the exercise will now commence on February 3, 2025, allowing better alignment with key stakeholder needs.
The comprehensive four-week operation will involve temporary suspension of reverse gas flows from Ghana’s Western Region to Tema in Ghana, and the shutdown of critical facilities in Tema, Ghana; Lomé, Togo; and Cotonou, Benin.
During this period, WAPCo will replace subsea valves at strategic locations to ensure operational safety and system integrity.
This cleaning and inspection project is an essential regulatory requirement aimed at maintaining the safe and efficient operations of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP). The initiative covers the entire pipeline infrastructure, spanning from Itoki in Ogun State, Nigeria, to Takoradi in Ghana’s Western Region.
The inspection exercise is divided into two phases. The first phase, completed in December 2024, focused on cleaning and inspecting the onshore pipeline section within Nigeria. The second phase, set to run from February 3 to March 2, 2025, will target the offshore section of the WAGP, stretching from Badagry in Lagos State, Nigeria, to Takoradi, Ghana.
WAPCo conducts these inspections every five years to ensure the continued safety, reliability, and efficiency of the WAGP. This proactive maintenance underscores the company’s commitment to upholding industry best practices while contributing to the energy security of the West African region.
