A final year student at the secondary level whose identity has not been disclosed refused to write one of his final year exams because the paper was written on a Saturday.
The student who was believed to be an Adventist protested to write on Saturday because it’s against his belief as Saturdays are Sabbath days or resting days for Adventists and should be treated holy.
He joined two other Adventist students who were also not ready to defile the Sabbath day by writing Asante Twi.
According to him on Asempa FM, he did not take part in the examination because it is against his church beliefs.
“Yes I did not write, it was Asante Twi and I refused to write the paper because I believe in my beliefs. My Church has beliefs and I’m sticking to it. Our Church petitioned the President but the petition was not agreed upon. For now, I can’t write Asante Twi and if I will have to write that paper it will be Nov/Dec”, he said.
He added that he didn’t skip the paper just because it wasn’t a core subject but solely for his religious beliefs.
“I don’t see any other subject as superior to the other. If it were core Maths or Integrated Science I still wouldn’t have written the paper. I will never write any paper on a Saturday going forward. Anything that will destroy my observance of the Sabbath I will never do it. In my school, we are three boys who didn’t take part in the exams. Other Adventists took part in the exams”, he explained.
“Friday some people wrote the exams. It is their belief and it’s my belief so if the papers were scheduled for Sunday, I will have written it but on Saturday, my belief system tells me to never risks the Sabbath day.”
He used the platform to plead to the president to certify that examinations will not be scheduled on Saturdays so that all student Adventists can observe the Sabbath day and not defile it.
