The Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Secretariat of the GWCL Kojo Daase explained the government’s extension of free water for lifeline customers in the next three months “can only apply to domestic customers. Public standpipes owned by GWCL certainly goes beyond the 0-5m3 and hence cannot be free”
Therefore, customers who fetch water from public standpipes of the GWCL will continue to pay.
He also explained that customers who consume 0-5m3 of water monthly per meter in households are qualified as lifeline customers covered by the government’s free water intervention.
This means Ghana Water Company Limited customers who will enjoy the free water intervention are those who pay less than Ghc18 a month per Meter.
The President in his 21st address to the nation said, “With the continuing difficulties occasioned by the pandemic, I want to state that government intends to continue to support the most vulnerable in our society.
“Government will, thus, continue to pay the electricity bills for our nation’s one million active lifeline customers for the next three months, i.e. January, February, and March.
“Additionally, all one million, five hundred thousand customers of the Ghana Water Company, whose consumption is not more than five cubic meters a month, will not pay any bills for the next three months, i.e. for January, February and March.”
He however said the pro-poor policy interventions package will be reviewed at the end of March 2021.
