Rev. Father Michael Ka Quaicoe, Director for Governance, Justice, and Peace at the Ghana Catholic Bishop Conference, has announced that the church will not accept donations from individuals involved in galamsey (illegal mining).
According to Rev. Quaicoe, the church is committed to protecting the environment and preserving God’s creation.
He emphasized that it is contradictory to support the church’s work while destroying the environment.
On Bryt Adekye Mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney, Rev. said that they had a conversation concerning how they will be able to protect the environment because that’s what God has given to us , us our property and so we should have an advantage of that and protect it as well.
“If some people are destroying our land because of greediness and selfishness , then we have to double our step to see if our actions are effective enough , and we’ve thought about it that the Galamsey that is going on , definitely some of the people will be from our churches and if you are in our country or from our church and we advise you about it and you don’t listen, then there is no need for us to take your money for any support of God’s works if you can’t protect his creatures”.
“The church’s stance is clear, if you engage in galamsey, your money is not welcome. By taking this stand, the Catholic Church is promoting environmental responsibility and encouraging its members to prioritize the protection of nature”.
