Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the leader of the majority caucus in parliament, has said that if the minority decides to introduce a resolution to call Dr. Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), to Parliament, the majority caucus won’t support them.
Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu asserts that the Minority has already acquired a bad opinion of the Governor as a result of their public demonstrations.
He noted that rather than resorting to public protests, the opposition Members of Parliament should have chosen to ask the Governor to a parliamentary hearing to discuss concerns over the new headquarters building and the estimated GHS60.8 billion loss.
“We are Members of Parliament, we could have invited the Governor to come and talk about the issues that are not clear to us. You go on a demonstration and organize a press conference against the man then you come back to Parliament to move the motion [to invite him], do you want me to support that?
“Now, you have made up your mind that whatever has been done by [the Governor] is inappropriate, you are not going to countenance it, so if he comes to explain the issues, are you going to take it or jettison it?” the Suame Lawmaker told TV3 in an interview on Monday.
Due to claims of poor administration, the Minority has been calling for the resignations of Dr. Addison and his two assistants.
The three officials were first given 21 days to quit, but subsequently they turned to public demonstrations, marching to the central bank’s offices to physically demand their resignations.
The funding of more than $200 million for the construction of a cutting-edge headquarters in Accra at a time when the Central Bank recorded financial losses particularly enraged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament (MPs).
