Parliamentary Candidates for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress(NDC) in Lower West Akyem Constituency of the Eastern Region have said they have no interest in encouraging Violence before, during, and after Election in the Area.
They have therefore called on the Electoral Commission and the Security Services to act professionally and be unbiased in this year’s Parliamentary and Presidential election.
Mr. Charles Acheampong, NPP candidate, and Mr. Michael Adusei, NDC candidate said this in an engagement dubbed “Ballots Without Bullets” organized by the Ghana National Commission on Small Arms which was supported by United Nations Development Program(UNDP) and the German Cooperation/Deutsche Zusammenarbeit in Asamankese.
Addressing key stakeholders, Mr. Charles Acheampong, the NPP Parliamentary candidate vowed to ignore any supporter arrested for electoral violence and called on them to preach peace and unity and avoid participating in political debate that can end up in violence.
Mr. Michael Adusei, NDC Parliamentary candidate also said and the NDC does not represent violence and will not be engaging in any violent acts, adding, Lower West Akyem Constituency will continue to be peace place after the election.
Executive Director of the Ghana National Commission on Small Arms, Mr. Jones Applerh said the “Ballots without Bullets” campaign is being organized for Parliamentary Candidates and other stakeholders of the election in twelve Constituencies across the country declared as hot spots by the Ghana Police Service.
He said the Commission aim at Safeguarding Public Safety and Security by controlling the proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons.
Mr. Applerh said when Parliamentary Candidates preach peace; it reduces tension in campaigning and Election Day and noted that the candidate Communication has a lot of influence on supporters.
