The Vice President and potential flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stressed that the party needs unity to break the eight (8) and also the significance of keeping the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in opposition.
On June 2, Bawumia remarked during the last leg of his Greater Accra Regional campaign that it was crucial for the NPP candidates to run a moral campaign in order to preserve the party’s cohesion following the eagerly anticipated primaries.
“We are one family, let’s all stay united, when the contest is over, we will come back together as one family and make sure the NDC doesn’t come back to power, that is very important.”
Bawumia emphasized that breaking the 8 was definitely doable, but it could only be done by the rank and file working together.
“We want unity, unity, unity, nkabom in the NPP, that is the only way we can break the 8,” he added to applause.
“No need to insult anyone because we need unity after the election… I am telling all my supporters and spokespersons to not insult anyone. We want peace, clean campaign, we want to unite after the election and take on the NDC,” he stated in earlier comments.
Along with Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and former trade minister Alan Kyerematen, Dr. Bawumia is seen to be the front-runner in the NPP presidential primary.
There are seven other candidates in the flagbearership competition in addition to Ken, Bawumia, and Alan. On June 30, the party established a committee under the direction of Mike Oquaye, a former speaker of parliament, to interview the candidates the following week.
If all ten candidates make it beyond the screening round, it is widely anticipated that a preliminary election to reduce the field to five would be held before to the main election, which will be held in November of this year.
