NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the administration has strengthened and revitalized the National Health Insurance Scheme.
Under the John Agyekum Kufuor administration, the New Patriotic Party launched the National Health Insurance Scheme. However, when the National Democratic Congress came to power and promised a one-time premium, the program experienced payment problems.
Speaking to stakeholders in the Ashanti Region’s Suame Constituency on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia stated that the NPP inherited the program that had been abandoned by the John Mahama administration but has been resurrected under this administration.
The National Health Insurance Scheme was virtually collapsed under Mahama but we have revived and strengthened it. We have put in so much money. Today, sicknesses that were not under the NHIS are today under the the NHIS. Childhood cancer that is children with cancer is now free under the National Health Insurance Scheme.”
“Sickle cell sufferers also have a drug they use called hydroxy urea. It is a very expensive drug but very potent for sickle cell sufferers. We have negotiated and we are giving these drugs to sickle cell sufferers free under the NHIS.”
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia declared that kidney dialysis will be free starting on December 1, 2024, following a successful six-month pilot program for anyone under the age of 18 and over 60 under the NHIS program.
