Ghanaian actor now turned politician, John Dumelo has urged people to be “angry” over the country’s widespread illicit mining, which is endangering important water sources.
He asserts that Ghana will start importing food and water if the threat, also known as galamsey, is not subdued because there won’t be any left to drink or cook with.
He said that because of the soaking chemicals used in the unlawful mining operation, it will significantly harm Ghana’s position as the world’s second-largest producer of cocoa.
Taking to Twitter, he advised: “If we don’t tackle this galamsey menace we will lose our spot as world’s 2nd producer of cocoa. Our farmlands will be totally wiped out, and we will start importing food.
“The few farmlands left will be SOAKED in chemicals. We will start importing drinking water,” he said.
Mr. Dumelo’s declaration comes in response to Prof. Kwabena Frimpong- Boateng, a former minister of environment, science, technology, and innovation, who claimed that several senior government officials were involved in the illicit mining activity known as “galamsey.”
The eminent scholar, who served as secretary to President Nana Akufo-Addo during his first term, stated that the corruption extends to Jubilee House, the seat of government.
