President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced a new affordable-housing policy for teachers. He said the affordable housing initiative will involve the provision of houses for both mortgage and rental. He added that the project will be completed by 2024 and will be made up of 10,000 units.
The President said, “Through a subsidised loan programme, teachers will be provided an opportunity to own houses in desired locations in various parts of the country.”
President Akufo-Addo made this known on Tuesday, January 4 while addressing the 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in Kumasi.
However, speaking to the media, Counsellor Daniel Fenyi, an educationist, has indicated that, the biggest accommodation challenge of the Ghanaian teacher is staff bungalows.
He said that teachers spend most part of their career life renting people’s apartments and he believes that takes away the little salary of the teacher.
The Counsellor, therefore, recommended that in the short term plan, the government should raise bungalows around the basic and secondary schools in the country for teachers. To Counsellor, when teachers get their peace of mind, they can build their own houses before retirement.
