A medical team from the West Akim Municipal Health Directorate in the Eastern Region led by Mr.Festus Nartey, an Oncology nurse specialist, provided education on breast cancer symptoms, preventive measures and dispelled common myths surrounding the disease and a total of 96 were screened for free as part of activities for breast cancer awareness creation month.
The month of October is commemorated annually as Breast Cancer Awareness Month worldwide.
The one- day event held at the West Akim Municipal Assembly premises was to create awareness on the need for early examination, detection and treatment of breast cancer in both men and women.
The Health Directorate used the event to screen 186 others for free on Ear, Nose and Throat.
Other screen services were Dental care,Eye screening, Blood pressure checking, Weight, Height, Blood glucose, Laboratory test, mental health Counseling and Medical consultation.
Persons with disabilities were giving special care during the free screening services and about to 50 of them in Asamankese Township benefited.
The Health Directorate also distributed free first aid drugs to some participants who were screened and referred some for further examination and treatment.
The event was held in collaboration with Meboafo Foundation Rotary Club-Accra , Nkunim FM and Queen mother of Asamankese,Nana Akosua Birikoramaa II.
Mr. Nartey expressed appreciation to the participants and partners and described the initiative as laudable in identifying early symptoms of possible breast cancers in Ghana.
He urged the attendees to examine their breasts at least once in every month and not wait for only the month of October.
