The West Akyem Municipal Health Directorate in the Eastern Region has recorded 143 Abortion related cases from January to June 2023.
Out of the number, 9 per cent were Elective, 16% were Induced and 75% were Spontaneous Abortion.
Contrarily, Abortion Cases for 2021 was 74 against 45 in 2022.
Addressing Heads of Health Facilities under the Municipal Directorate during mid-year performance review, Public Health Nurse, Madam Elizabeth Mensah said the increase in abortion related cases is attributed to the use of herbal concoction but the Health Directorate with intensify public education to curb the menace.
During the period, two maternal deaths we’re recorded,however, no case was recorded in first quarter of 2021 and 2022 respectively.
Stillbirth reduced from 22 in 2021 to 16 in 2022 and 15 in first quarter of 2023 .
Teenage pregnancy also reduced marginally from 246 in 2021 and 2022 first quarter to 242 in 2023, whiles neonatal death also increased from one to two cases in 2023.
A total of 380 Cesarean Section birth were delivered against 1,009 normal delivery as the Municipal Health Directorate faces inadequate delivery equipments and supplies for effective service at which oxygen is key among the needs.
