Can Ethiopia make this election count?
A war, a possible famine, ethnic tensions: it’s fair to say the country’s got a lot on its plate right now.
And yet, amidst all this, a general election is being held – the first one since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took office in 2018.
“I was speaking to residents of Hawassa and they say that, as long as it’s peaceful, they just want to participate,” says BBC Amharic’s Kaleb Moges.
Not everyone’s convinced the results will be meaningful though. But why exactly?
Well, just look at Ethiopia’s most populous region, Oromia.
“The prominent parties in the region are not participating in the coming election, because their leaders are arrested,” says Kaleb.
So, how much does this vote really matter? Find out in Thursday’s episode of Africa Daily.
