The Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission (WD-FC) has announced that the close season for hunting and capturing wild animals will commence from August 1, 2021, and end on December 1, 2021.
The ban has been placed on hunting and capturing all wild animals except grass cutters.
Closed seasons are designed to protect a species when it is most vulnerable or, sometimes, to protect animals during their breeding season for conservation and sustainability.
A statement issued Tuesday, July 13, 2021, said the five months ban is in line with the Wildlife Convention Regulations Legislative Instrument (LI) 685 of 1971, and any person who contravenes any provision of these regulations would be guilty of an offense and liable on summary conviction to a fine.
Poaching is prevalent in Ghana leading to an onslaught of wild animals resulting in extinction.
The Wildlife Division is handicapped due to inadequate personnel and logistics.
In the Eastern Region, the Atewa Forest Reserve is pregnant with poachers killing wild animals with impunity.
