Nana Nyarko Bawuah, the Chief of Kwahu Bepong, has made a startling revelation, suggesting that some women in the community were involved in supplying stones to men who attacked the police and the palace.
This revelation adds a new dimension to the recent violence that erupted in Kwahu Bepong following the alleged rape and murder of a woman, further highlighting the complexity of the situation.
The Chief commended the Ghana Police Service for the professional handling of the situation which he says but for their tactical intervention would have spiraled into more distrative unrest.
The Chief said this Tuesday when Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong visited Kwahu Bepong community on Tuesday February 6,2024.
Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong, also the chairman of the Regional Security Council, has dismissed calls for the immediate withdrawal of police personnel from the troubled community of Kwahu Bepong.
The suggestion for withdrawal came from Member of Parliament for Mpraeso Davis Opoku-Ansah, aiming to reduce tension in the area.
Seth Kwame Acheampong, who visited Kwahu Bepong in the company of Eastern North Police Command security leadership and Kwahu East Municipal Security Council to assess the situation and ensure law and order, stated that it would be premature to make such a decision.
The Regional Minister and his entourage visited the chiefs palace,adressed police personnel deployed from Accra to reinforce security in the community and visited the victims at the hospital and bereavrd family.
Additionally, he visited victims at the Atibie Government Hospital and bereaved families affected by the recent violence.
The unrest in Kwahu Bepong was triggered by the alleged rape and murder of a 45-year-old woman, Akua Kyerewaa, by a 23-year-old ex-convict, Kwasi Tenkorang.
Tensions escalated further when the victim’s brother, Kwasi Antwi, was killed while trying to rescue his sister during the attack.
The community’s demand for justice led to the arrest of Kwasi Tenkorang, but it also resulted in clashes between the police and a mob, leading to injuries and property damage.
Five police officers were injured, six police motorbikes and patrol vehicle damaged.
Glass sliding doors of the palace and a rural bank were smashed.
Over 70 individuals linked to the assault on police officers and property destruction have been apprehended by the Ghana Police Service.
As efforts continue to restore calm and promote dialogue in Kwahu Bepong, the Regional Minister’s stance emphasizes the importance of maintaining security measures while addressing the underlying issues that have led to the recent violence.
