Kumasi-based Wontumi FM journalist, Emmanuel Kwakye Asare, has been granted bail after spending two weeks in police custody.
Mr. Asare was arrested on August 12, 2025, and charged with one count of offensive conduct over what authorities described as the publication of false news intended to cause fear and panic. Details of the alleged publication have not yet been disclosed publicly.
Appearing before the court, Mr. Asare’s lawyers argued for his release, saying the charges against him were unfounded and that he posed no risk of fleeing or interfering with investigations. The court subsequently granted him bail in the sum of GH₵100,000.
Under the bail conditions, two sureties are required, both of whom must be civil servants. His legal team is currently working to complete the necessary paperwork to fulfill these requirements and secure his release.
The case has drawn attention from media rights advocates, with some calling for greater protection for journalists in the line of duty. Proceedings are expected to continue as police investigate the matter further.
