Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is apparently ill but has pledged to completely cooperate with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as investigations into an undisclosed matter continue.
In an interview with Asaase Radio, his attorney, Andy Appiah-Kubi, disclosed that Wontumi was unable to accept a planned invitation from the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) due to his present physical condition.
“Because of the arrest, we couldn’t honour the CID invitation,” Appiah-Kubi explained. “I will call the CID headquarters to inform them about my client’s health condition and seek an adjourned date until his condition improves.”
Despite the setback, the lawyer maintained that the team is cooperating with investigators. “They are still investigating, and at the appropriate time, when he is put before court, we will also prepare as well,” he said, adding that “we will be going back to them tomorrow to complete investigations.”
On Monday, June 2, 2025, Wontumi was freed from EOCO detention, where he had been detained in connection with an ongoing investigation. The investigation’s specifics are still unknown.
In the meantime, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua has made a forceful statement, calling on the government to stop what he calls “intimidation” and instead bring legal action against those he claims are to blame for the state’s financial losses.
Following Wontumi’s publication, Kodua stated, “If they know they have a case, they should take our people to court and stop the intimidation. They should go to court so that we can prove to them that we have the lawyers to mount any form of defense. If they say Wontumi has done something wrong, take him to court.”
Kodua went on to say that the present measures against party members were politically driven and without legal support.
“The intimidation and persecution is a clear indication that they have nothing to prosecute according to the law,” he said.
