In 2022 alone, Ghana recorded an alarming 27,385 new cancer cases and 17,944 cancer-related deaths.
This year, the Ghana Health Service is observing World Cancer Day with a renewed call for prevention, early detection, timely treatment, and the reduction of stigma associated with the disease.
Addressing the media at a press briefing at the GHS Headquarters, the Ag. Director-General, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, revealed that this year’s commemoration focuses on prostate and liver cancer which occur in men, with a 52% and 90% mortality rate respectively.
‘Although these cancers are among the leading causes of death in Ghana, they are unfortunately not highlighted enough’, he emphasized.
In line with the theme for this year’s celebration, “United by Unique: Experiences of Cancer Survivors in Ghana”, Prof. Akoriyea noted with appreciation, the inspirational stories of resilient cancer survivors, Frontline health workers, dedicated caregivers.
He further stressed the role of the media in creating awareness on healthy diet, physical activity and vaccination as effective ways of preventing cancer.
During the press briefing, Ms. Hannah Tetteh, a survivor of mengioma shared a touching narrative of how she was diagnosed, underwent series of surgeries, and has survived amid financial and social challenges.
As part of the commemoration, free health screenings were conducted at the Service’s premises, with complimentary treatment provided for any detected illnesses.
