The Yeji Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC) is grappling with a series of pressing infrastructural and logistical challenges that continue to hinder its smooth operation, nearly a decade after its establishment in 2016.
These issues were brought to light during the institution’s 2nd Graduation and 5th Matriculation Ceremony held on Friday, April 4, 2025.
In a heartfelt address, the Principal of the college, Mrs. Vicencia Mottey, painted a grim picture of the school’s condition, listing a lack of modern teaching infrastructure, insufficient classroom space, and the absence of hostel facilities as key obstacles.
“Students are forced to seek accommodation in private homes due to the unavailability of hostels,” Mrs. Mottey disclosed, adding that the situation not only affects academic concentration but also poses safety and convenience challenges.
Further compounding the school’s woes are the lack of official vehicles for administrative and academic duties, inadequate toilet facilities, and increasing security threats from the surrounding community.
The Principal emphasized that these concerns demand urgent government intervention.
The Special Guest of Honour, Member of Parliament for Pru East, Hon. Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, acknowledged the gravity of the challenges and pledged to advocate on the school’s behalf.
He promised to channel the concerns to the appropriate ministry, particularly the Ministry of Health.
Hon. Boam, who also toured the school to assess the extent of infrastructural deficits, gave assurances that security remains a top priority.
He stated that he would collaborate with the soon-to-be-confirmed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) to enhance safety for students and the broader Yeji community.
He appealed to the Minister for Health to expedite work on the college’s ongoing projects, especially the construction of classrooms and hostels, to support the institution’s academic goals and ensure a conducive learning environment.
The Yeji NMTC remains a critical training ground for healthcare professionals in the region.
Stakeholders are hopeful that the renewed attention from local authorities will lead to swift action in addressing the longstanding challenges.
