The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has flagged the Doctorate Degree held by the Member of Parliament for Yilo Krobo, Albert Nyarkotey, as unrecognized.
Mr. Nyarkotey a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy reportedly obtained a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) in Management from the Swiss Management Centre (SMC) in 2022 which has reflected on his resumes.
In a statement dated October 20, 2025, GTEC said the qualification, along with a related Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) awarded jointly by Universidad Central de Nicaragua (UCN) and SMC University, is not recognized in Ghana for academic or professional purposes.
“The Commission wishes to inform all Heads of Tertiary Institutions that it does not recognize the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) awarded by the Swiss Management Centre University and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) jointly awarded by Universidad Central de Nicaragua (UCN) and Swiss Management Centre University,” the statement read.
GTEC’s directive follows increasing public enquiries about the accreditation status of such foreign institutions and their top-up doctoral programs.
The Commission stressed that the notice supersedes all previous communications issued by the defunct National Accreditation Board and the current GTEC on the matter.

GTEC stated that individuals including some with political and academic backgrounds who claimed to have acquired the post graduate titled from these Universities must desist from using the title “Ph.D ” or “Dr.
GTEC has urged the public to verify the accreditation status of any institution before enrolling in any programme or using its certificates for academic or professional purposes.
