Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a former member of parliament for the Adentan Constituency for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has characterized the party as possessing an oppressive image and abdicating President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s power.
Buaben Asamoa, who recently lost his membership in the NPP along with three other legends for endorsing independent presidential contender John Alan Kyerematen, claims that the president has taken control of the party and is dictating its future course.
“The party has changed character; a party ought to be an association of like minds with freedom and opportunity to rub minds and seek out the best spaces. The New Patriotic Party that I knew in the beginning is not the New Patriotic Party that exists now. It’s become divided by heavy factionalism. Literally, it has been taken over by the executive, that is the blunt truth. The party doesn’t exist.
“The government has taken the party over, the personality of the president is overbearing, and he controls that party, and that means that if you don’t do the president’s wish; if you are not in the president’s good books you are not useful to that party. That is the bottom line, that is what is happening,” he stated in an interview on Citi TV’s Face to Face program.
On November 21, 2023, Justin Frimpong Kodua, the general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), declared that four prominent party members would no longer be able to have their membership.
According to a press release from the general secretary, the four—Hopeson Adorye, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique—were kicked out of the party because of their open support of Alan Kyerematen.
Alan Kyerematen, who left the NPP before the party’s most recent presidential primaries, founded a political outfit called outfit for Change, which uses the Golden Butterfly as its emblem.
In order to justify his resignation, Mr. Kyerematen stated that he and his followers had been treated unfairly by the party and government.
He went on to accuse the government and leadership of manipulating the flagbearer competition to benefit Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
