Former member of parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has harshly criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) general secretary, saying he has no authority to muzzle her or anybody else.
She emphasized that everyone in Ghana has the constitutional right to free speech while speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse show.
She maintained that since everyone has a constitutional right to free speech, it should be permitted. She made her comment in reaction to a statement released by the NPP General Secretary, which instructed party members to refrain from discussing internal party issues with the media.
“We all have the right to express ourselves, and that includes me,” she said. “The General Secretary began speaking publicly after we lost the election, going around explaining the situation. He even went as far as telling people not to blame him for the loss.”
She raised concerns about the General Secretary’s ability to openly criticize former President Akufo-Addo on radio, saying that the president was not listening to the party’s counsel during cabinet meetings.
“And now, when it’s my turn to speak, a statement is being issued. What locus does he have to do that?” she asked. “He was on the radio himself, so if he wants to write a letter to me, he should do so privately. This statement is too vague, and I don’t think it’s something I need to respond to.”
She added, “Nobody brought me into the party, and the party does not belong to any individual. We are all here to build the party, so nobody can force me out or silence me.”
Adwoa Safo also drew attention to the party’s base’s mounting discontent.
“He [General Secretary] should go on social media and see how party members are criticising him. He has an election coming up, and he shouldn’t allow himself to be manipulated or used for other people’s agendas. If your base is bitter and feels unheard, they will want someone to speak for them.”
