Isaac Adongo, a member of parliament for Bolgatanga Central Constituency, demanded on the floor of the legislature that Minister of Finance, Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta to quit office after being called to explain the contentious Domestic Debt Swap Program on Wednesday (DDEP).
Mr. Ofori-Atta had testified before the lawmakers to explain the government’s restructuring initiative, which had led to the adoption of the Programme and the ongoing picketing of pensioners at his Ministry.
The Finance Minister explained that “government is committed to the well-being of our senior citizens and pensioners”.
“The government will honour their coupon payments and maturing principles” he assured.
But before leaving the House, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP commented on the speech and requested Mr. Ofori-Atta resigns immediately for the economic mess created.
He lamented “Everything, he claimed, demonstrates how the finance minister failed to perform his duties.
He keeps quoting the Bible to hide his incompetence and claims that Mr. Ofori-Atta has increased the risk associated with government bonds”.
The congressman made reference to Mr. Ofori- Atta’s non-payment wages by warning Ghanaians to be wary of public officials who do so.
According to Mr. Adongo, Mr. Ofori-Atta and other state officials pose a threat to the nation’s welfare, and the present Finance Minister has led Ghana in that direction.
Prior to Mr. Adongo’s speech, the Speaker of the House, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, requested that members of Parliament speak in proper legislative language rather than using Ghanaian slang normally displayed at hop bars.
