Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has come under fire from Defense Minister Dr. Omane Boamah for blaming the party’s 2024 election loss on outside forces rather than taking personal responsibility.
In recent comments, Dr. Bawumia cited a number of factors that contributed to the NPP’s defeat, including internal strife, the unpopular E-Levy, the contentious Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), and what he called “arrogance of power.”
He maintained that the public’s trust was seriously damaged as a result of these problems.
On Sunday, April 27, however, Dr. Boamah refuted these allegations in a Facebook post, accusing Dr. Bawumia of shifting blame.
“Elections 2024: Bawumia is blaming everything & everybody EXCEPT HIMSELF. Bawumia was critical of the NPP’s economic mess!” Dr. Boamah wrote.
The critique from Dr. Boamah coincides with heightened scrutiny of Dr. Bawumia’s involvement in Ghana’s economic management under the NPP, particularly his role as head of the Economic Management Team.
Dr. Boamah is among a number of political officials and pundits who contend that the NPP’s electoral setback was largely caused by the economic challenges it faced during its rule.
