South Africa’s justice minister says former president Jacob Zuma will be eligible for parole after about four months.
Ronald Lamola said this was a time for restraint, not celebration, and promised Mr Zuma would be treated like any other prisoner.
He will spend the first two weeks of his 15-month sentence in isolation in line with Covid regulations.
The former president turned himself into police on Wednesday night to begin his jail term for contempt of court.
He was sentenced last week after failing to appear before a corruption inquiry.
Mr Zuma denies there was widespread corruption and has not cooperated with the legal process against him.
