At least 13 people are feared dead and 18 others injured following a serious road accident involving a Toyota Hiace and a Ford Transit at MotherKope, near God’s Love Herbal Clinic.
The crash occurred in the early hours of the day, with the two vehicles travelling in opposite directions along the Accra–Aflao route.
The Toyota Hiace, with registration number GX 3186-20, was reportedly travelling from Accra towards Aflao, while the Ford Transit, with registration number GW 5558-23, was heading from Aflao towards Accra.
According to the incident report, the accident occurred as the Ford Transit was ascending a hill while the Toyota Hiace was descending.
The head of the Ford Transit reportedly ran into the side of the Toyota Hiace, resulting in a devastating collision that left both vehicles badly damaged.
The front and side doors of the Toyota Hiace were severely mangled, while the Ford Transit was described as being extensively damaged.
The driver of the Toyota Hiace was among those injured in the crash.
The emergency call was received at 5:58 a.m., and the Sege Fire Extrication Team arrived at the scene at 6:06 a.m. to assist with rescue and recovery operations.
Firefighters worked to extricate victims from the wreckage and subsequently moved the damaged vehicles to the side of the road to prevent further obstruction and danger to other road users.
The team also cleared debris from the roadway and washed away spilled blood following the crash before traffic was reopened.
A total of 18 injured persons were transported to Sege Polyclinic for medical attention. Some of the injured victims were subsequently referred to the Ada East District Hospital at FaithKope for further treatment.
However, the incident report indicates that 13 people are feared dead. The identities of the deceased and the exact circumstances surrounding the reported fatalities had not been independently established at the time of reporting.
The emergency response operation was completed, with the fire team returning to the station at 7:47 a.m.
The accident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with road travel, particularly along busy routes where vehicles frequently navigate hills and other potentially hazardous sections.
Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to establish the precise cause of the collision.
