On 18th June, 2026 the President of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, H.E. Carlos Manuel Vila Nova participated in the High-Level Consultative Conference on the Next Steps to the Landmark United Nations Resolution on the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans hosted by the President of the Republic of Ghana and African Union Champion for African Union Champion on Advancing the Cause of Justice and the Payment of Reparations, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.
He stated that the effects of the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans continue to manifest through social inequalities, economic disparities and systemic injustices across generations.
He described the adoption of UN Resolution A/RES/80/250 as historic and called on the international community to implementing it to promote healing and justice.
He emphasised the need for in-depth research, education and public awareness on the transatlantic slave trade and its enduring consequences. He also advocated for the preservation of sites of memory and support for initiatives aimed at promoting historical understanding, remembrance and reconciliation.
He said that the pursuit of reparatory justice should be driven by reconciliation founded on truth.
He, therefore, called on participants to transform remembrance into action through practical recommendations, concrete commitments and a clear roadmap for implementing the Resolution.
