The Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, has assured parents and guardians that the safety and protection of students remain a top priority for the government, following allegations of sexual abuse involving 19 students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Minister assured the public that the matter would not be swept under the carpet, emphasising that the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) would pursue all necessary administrative and legal measures to ensure justice is served. He also disclosed that the school had reopened fully to continuing and fresh students to resume normal academic activities.
As part of measures to strengthen student protection, Hon. Haruna directed the GES to end the practice of students serving as domestic helpers to headteachers and teachers. He further announced plans to establish confidential reporting channels, explore a dedicated hotline with MTN, provide trauma-informed support for affected students, and strengthen safeguarding and reporting procedures across schools. He called on parents, guardians and the public to support efforts to protect learners and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
