MTN Ghana has announced plans to invest US$1.1 billion over the next three years to expand its network infrastructure, improve service quality and strengthen connectivity across the country.
The investment includes approximately US$380 million earmarked for 2026, alongside the deployment of 500 new cell sites nationwide this year to extend coverage to more communities, including underserved areas.
David Gyimah Boadi, General Manager of MTN Ghana, disclosed this during the company’s Regional Media and Stakeholder Engagement held in Koforidua on Monday, October 26, 2026.
He said the investment forms part of MTN Ghana’s broader commitment to improving connectivity, strengthening digital inclusion and creating opportunities for individuals, businesses and communities.
According to him, the company has evolved over its 30 years of operations in Ghana from a telecommunications provider into a digital platform supporting communication, financial inclusion and economic activity.
He acknowledged that the company had faced challenges in extending network coverage over the years but said feedback from customers and stakeholders had helped drive improvements in service delivery.
MTN Strengthens Cybersecurity and MoMo Protection
Mr. Boadi stressed that expanding connectivity must go hand in hand with protecting customers’ personal information and financial transactions.
He said MTN Ghana was strengthening its data privacy frameworks and investing in cybersecurity to safeguard its network and maintain customer confidence.
Marking October as Cybersecurity Month, he urged customers to take personal responsibility for their online safety by protecting their mobile money PINs, passwords and other sensitive information.
He also highlighted the growing importance of MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) to Ghana’s financial inclusion drive.
According to the company’s figures for the first half of 2026, MoMo transaction value increased by 44.4 per cent year-on-year, while active users grew by 3.1 per cent. Transaction volumes and MoMo revenue each increased by 23.3 per cent.
He said the growth demonstrated the platform’s expanding role in supporting individuals and businesses, adding that the company would continue investing in security measures to protect customers against fraud.
MTN Reports Strong Financial Performance
Mr. Boadi also announced that MTN Ghana recorded strong financial results in the first half of 2026, with service revenue increasing by 32.3 per cent to GH¢15 billion.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 47.1 per cent to GH¢9.3 billion, while the EBITDA margin improved to 61.8 per cent.
Profit after tax also increased by 46.8 per cent to GH¢5.1 billion.
He added that the company contributed GH¢5.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes during the period, alongside GH¢384.7 million in fees and levies.
According to him, the financial performance would enable MTN Ghana to sustain investments in network infrastructure, support local businesses, create employment opportunities and finance social intervention programmes.
500 Students Benefit from MTN Scholarships
Beyond its commercial operations, Mr. Boadi said MTN Ghana remained committed to supporting education, digital innovation and youth development through its corporate social investment programmes.
He disclosed that the MTN Ghana Foundation had awarded 500 scholarships to young Ghanaians this year under the MTN Bright Scholarship Programme.
The scholarship package covers tuition, accommodation, a stipend and a laptop to support beneficiaries in their academic pursuits.
He also highlighted the MTN Skills Academy, which is equipping more than 100,000 young people with digital literacy, financial skills and career-readiness competencies to prepare them for opportunities in the digital economy.
Other initiatives include DigiFest 2026, the Tɛkyerɛma Pa Hackathon and the MTN Game Developer Contest 2026, which provide platforms for young people, students and aspiring developers to build practical skills and showcase innovative solutions.
He said MTN Ghana had also strengthened partnerships with the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to promote digital innovation and skills development.
The company, he added, had supported media practitioners and civil society organisations with practical knowledge on the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
MTN Increases Heroes of Change Prize to GH¢400,000
Mr. Boadi further announced an increase in the overall winner’s prize under the MTN Heroes of Change programme from GH¢100,000 to GH¢400,000.
He said the programme had also introduced new awards recognising sustainability and digital innovation, alongside recognition for individuals who nominate people making positive contributions to society.
He explained that the initiative reflected the company’s commitment to celebrating individuals whose work improves lives and supports community development.
He said MTN Ghana’s sustainability agenda was anchored on four pillars: Doing for the Planet, Doing for People, Doing it Right and Doing for Growth.
Despite the progress made, he acknowledged that challenges relating to affordability, access, digital literacy and relevant skills continued to limit the full benefits of technology for some Ghanaians.
He called for stronger collaboration among government, educational institutions, development partners and local communities to ensure that digital transformation benefited everyone.
MTN Marks 30 Years of Operations in Ghana
The engagement formed part of activities marking MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary under the theme “30 Years of Progress, Powered by You.”
Mr. Boadi expressed appreciation to the media, government, regulators, customers and communities for their contributions to the company’s growth over the past three decades.
He said the engagement was intended not only to provide updates on the company’s operations but also to strengthen collaboration, listen to stakeholder concerns and improve accountability.
He reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s commitment to investing in infrastructure, protecting customer trust and supporting initiatives that promote economic growth and improve the lives of Ghanaians.
