The Member of Parliament for Upper West Akim, Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Drah, who also serves as a member of Parliament’s Works and Housing Committee, has explained the committee’s mandate and responsibilities in overseeing key government institutions.
According to Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Drah, parliamentary rules require every Member of Parliament to serve on at least two core committees. He said he serves on the Works and Housing Committee as well as the Economic Development Committee.
Speaking on Bryt Adekyee mu Nsem, he explained that the Works and Housing Committee is responsible for scrutinising and monitoring the activities of the Ministry of Works and Housing and agencies under its jurisdiction.
He noted that following changes in the Ninth Parliament, Water Resources and Sanitation have been separated into a different committee, although the sector remains closely connected to the work of government.
Hon. Drah further explained that the Works and Housing Committee also exercises oversight over government agencies and companies operating under the Ministry of Works and Housing.
He said the committee’s responsibilities include examining the budgets of these institutions, monitoring how public funds are used, and assessing whether their activities are being carried out in accordance with government policies and approved plans.
He stressed that parliamentary oversight is important because the committee must ensure that government institutions operate properly and remain accountable to Parliament and the Ghanaian people.
Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Drah disclosed that the Works and Housing Committee has 17 members, who work together to scrutinized the activities, budgets and programmes of institutions under their oversight.
