Ghana football legend Mohammed Polo has refused to blame Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Okraku for the Black Stars’ struggles in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Black Stars have endured a difficult start to their qualifying campaign, suffering back-to-back defeats against Ivory Coast and The Gambia.
Ghana opened their campaign with a 2-0 loss to neighbours Ivory Coast in Bouake before suffering another setback at home, where they surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The disappointing results have intensified scrutiny around the national team, with questions being raised about the management of Ghana football and the leadership of the GFA.
However, Polo has refused to place the blame on Okraku, insisting that the GFA president has been working to develop Ghana football despite the challenges facing the national teams and clubs.
Speaking in an interview with Swiit FM, the former Hearts of Oak star defended the GFA president and argued that Okraku should not be held responsible for results on the pitch.
“To be frank, Kurt Okraku’s-led administration is striving to develop Ghana football, but things are not going as expected. I think Ghana is being hunted spiritually. There is a problem which must be rectified.
“Kurt Okraku is performing; he is not the problem, and I must be honest. I have been in the game since 1972, and I think Ghana football is rich now under Kurt,” Polo said.
The 1978 Africa Cup of Nations winner further pointed to the recent struggles of Ghanaian clubs in continental competitions, questioning why Okraku should be held personally responsible for their results.
“Just recently, Medeama and Nations FC were eliminated from the African club competitions. You fault Kurt Okraku for what? Is he a footballer?” he added.
Polo’s comments come at a time when the Black Stars are under growing pressure after their poor start to the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
With Ghana yet to record a point in Group C, the national team will need a strong response in their upcoming fixtures to revive their hopes of qualifying for the tournament.
