Ghana football legend Mohammed Polo has claimed that the country is being “hunted spiritually” following the Black Stars’ disappointing defeat to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The West African football giants suffered a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium after surrendering a two-goal lead in a dramatic encounter.
The Black Stars appeared to be in control after taking a 2-0 advantage, but The Gambia fought back to level the score before completing the comeback with two further goals in the second half.
The defeat compounded Ghana’s difficult start to the qualifying campaign after the Black Stars had earlier lost 2-0 to Ivory Coast in Bouake.
Speaking in an interview with Swiit FM, Polo expressed his shock at the result and suggested that there could be deeper issues affecting Ghana football.
“I was shocked,” Polo said. “I went to the Ghana FA headquarters for a personal engagement on the same matchday, but I didn’t know the Black Stars were going to play. There were no signs in town, and I think there is a problem somewhere,”
The former Hearts of Oak star then suggested that Ghana’s current football difficulties could have a spiritual dimension, while also defending Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku against criticism.
“To be frank, looking at the performance of Kurt Okraku’s-led administration and how he is striving to develop Ghana football, things are not going as expected. I think Ghana is being hunted spiritually. There is a problem which must be rectified,”
Despite the Black Stars’ struggles, Polo insisted that Okraku should not be blamed for the team’s poor results, arguing that the GFA president has been making efforts to develop the game.
“Kurt Okraku is performing; he is not the problem, and I must be honest. I have been in the game since 1972, and I think Ghana football is rich now under Kurt,” he added.
“Just recently, Medeama and Nations FC were eliminated from the African club competitions. You fault Kurt Okraku for what? Is he a footballer?” he said.
The Black Stars are now under pressure in Group C after suffering consecutive defeats to Ivory Coast and The Gambia, leaving Ghana without a point from their opening two matches of the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
