A total of 1,628,108 voters were registered in the Eastern Region during the just ended voters registration exercise. The Electoral Commission has announced.
This makes the Region third highest region after Greater Accra Region which had the most registered voters with 3,509,805 persons, and Ashanti Region with 3,013,856 persons.
Eastern region is the home region of the Current President Akufo Addo who hails from Kyebi in Abuakwa South Municipality and Akropong in Akuapem North.
In the 2016 Presidential Election, the ruling New Patriotic Party polled 63.11% of the valid votes cast while the opposition National Democratic Congress garnered 35.82%. Progressive people’s Party – 0.58%. CPP. 0.20%.Other smaller parties shared the rest of the votes.
The NPP is meanwhile targeting 70 % votes in December 2020 poll while the NDC targeting at least 45%.
Provisional Results
Provisional figures as announced Wednesday, August 12, 2020, by the Electoral Commission put the total number of persons who registered in the just ended voter registration exercise at 16,963,306.
It is made up of 30,814 persons registered during the two-day mop-up registration exercise organized over the weekend.
Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, said the figure is pending processes of deduplication and adjudication hence expects the figure to drop after these processes.
“The process of deduplication and adjudication, which are currently going will flag multiple registrations in the system,” she said.
“Additionally, the challenge system put in place during the registration and exhibition exercise will further flag unqualified voters on the register. We will contribute to the cleaning of the register and ensure its integrity and credibility ahead of the 2020 election.” Jean Mensah stressed.
The Commission has put in place an Adjudication Committee to manually determine close to 800,000 persons “quarantined” on multiple registrations and exceptions list.
