Personnel of Ghana National Fire Service in the Eastern regional headquarters have embarked on a massive clean-up exercise as part of the “Operation clean your frontage campaign”.
Over 100 fire personnel participated in the exercise which took part along the roadside near the Regional Fire Headquarters in Koforidua Effiduase.
The Regional Fire Officer Assistant Chief Fire Officer (1), Mrs Jennifer Naa Yarley Quaye led the personnel to clean and weed their frontage.
She said the exercise was in line with the President’s directives that every Ghanaian which includes all agencies and institutions keep the environment clean to build a healthy country.
“The fire service believes that one of the causes of bush fires is weedy areas, so anytime our surroundings are bushy and there is a drop of any substance that ignites a fire like cigarettes, it can easily catch fire and cause a lot of problems and this is the reason why fire service has embarked on this exercise,” she said.
She, therefore, entreated all Ghanaians to “embrace the President’s noble initiative so that at least every month we take the opportunity to clean up the environment saying the dry season is a period where weeds can easily cause a bush fire.
“Apart from the weeds causing bush fires, it can also breed mosquitoes, snakes and scorpions which are very dangerous to live with, therefore it is good to clean the environment because the bible says cleanliness is next to Godliness”. She said.
