The Acting Director-General of National Road Safety Authority Engineer David Osafo Adonteng has advised that approved trees should be planted along Highways instead of erecting huge reflective advertising billboards.
He explains that erecting unapproved billboards along Highways distracts drivers who attempt to read and view its content causing an accident.
He, however, said trees planted along the roadsides, should conform to the best practices of the National Road Safety Commission’s approved distance of 12 meters away from the road so that it doesn’t become a hindrance to drivers as it grows.
Engineer David Osafo Adonteng mentioned that properly planted trees along highways control erosion, serve as a windbreak, and sun shield and also make the journey refreshing among others hence encouraging more trees to be planted along Highways.
He said this when the National Road Safety Authority in Collaboration with the Covid-19 Trust fund see it as important to take advantage of the “Green Ghan Day” to plant trees along the Accra- Nsawam to Suhum main road and also to educate drivers on the road safety precautions he said.
The team took the opportunity to educate drivers on road safety.
Some drivers who participated in the road safety education program also expressed their joy and noted the importance of the program saying they are now enlightened with road safety tips of which they were not aware therefore it will go a long way to help them as drivers.
