The Municipal Chief Executive for Bibiani Anwhiaso Bekwai, Alfred Amoah, and his driver, Samuel Gyasi, has died in a gory accident on the Accra to Kumasi highway.
The horrific crash occurred on July 12, 2022, at about 5:15 pm at Akyem Fisher near the Bunso stretch of Accra to Kumasi Highway.
According to Police report, the MCE and his driver aboard a Nissan Patrol 4×4 No. GC 2060- 18 belonging to the Bibiani-Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Assembly were traveling from Accra towards the Bibiani direction.
However, on reaching a section of the road at Akim Fisher on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, a Man Diesel Articulated truck with registration number AS 4229-X from Kumasi direction veered off its lane and crashed head-on with the Nissan Patrol 4×4.
The MCE and his driver got trapped in the vehicle and both reportedly died on the spot, according to a police report.
The Police assisted the Ghana National Fire Service from Bunso and Kibi the bodies of the deceased were extricated and sent to Kibi Government Hospital where they were confirmed by the Medical Officer on duty.
He and his driver suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot, hospital sources at the Kibi Government Hospital said.
Their bodies have been deposited at the mortuary for preservation, identification, and autopsy, according to Inspector Edward Nimo, Kibi Divisional MTTD Commander.
Meanwhile Man Diesel Fuel tanker with registration number GN 8540-20 driven by Habibu Adam aged 35 years with an empty tank from Kumasi direction bumped into the accident scene seeing the danger ahead slammed his brakes to avoid a crash.
In the process, he lost control of the steering wheel, veered out of his lane, and landed into a ditch on the offside when facing Accra’s direction.
Meanwhile, efforts are being made to tow the accident vehicles from the scene while police pursue to arrest the articulated truck driver who is currently at large.
Government officials, including ministers and deputies, metropolitan, municipal and district chief executive officers, chief executive officers appointed by the President and presidential staffers have been attending a five-day retreat to discuss the national economy and to take stock of programmes.
The retreat which started last Friday, discussed the various flagship programmes of the government and the reason for accessing an IMF programme, as well as reviewed the cost-cutting measures announced at the last cabinet meeting in March this year.
Meanwhile, the Western North regional minister, Richard Rocky Joojo Obeng also confirming the report to the media, said he and Amoah parted ways from a meeting in Accra hours before the crash.
