The Environmental Health Officer at the New Juaben North Municipality, Mr Daniel Kweku Darko has disclosed that the Environmental Protection Agency has distributed over a thousand (1000) dustbins to households in the municipality.
Mr Darko said the distribution of the dustbins was purposely to get rid of diseases and infections caused by poor sanitation among citizens.
“We received fifteen (15) communal dustbins as a result of collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited to serve the municipality,’’ said Mr Darko.
He, however, urged the public to take the sanitation role among themselves to enhance hygiene in their various communities.
He stated that Environmental Health Officers have been visiting communities, marketplaces, schools, dumping sites and houses to improve education on environmental health issues.
Speaking about unhygienic conditions in the municipality, Mr Darko complained that an unhygienic environment has a lot of negative consequences for society hence there is a need for Ghanaians to practice good hygiene and sanitation.
Mr Danko made the submission in an interview with Nhyiraba Nartey Solomon of Bryt FM in Koforidua.
He also bemoaned inadequately trained personnel at the EPA to assist in its performance to ensure our environment is always clean.
”People who are not complying with our sanitation rules are facing the consequences in the courts because of their knowledge on sanitation issues” Mr Darko added.
Mr Darko averred that the education by the environmental health officers is helping combat malaria, diarrhoea, skin infections and many other diseases in the country.
He indicated officers always visit information centres to create awareness to improve environmental health and sanitation in the communities.
