Gambian authorities have asked the regional body ECOWAS for assistance in setting up a hybrid trial to prosecute crimes which took place during the presidency of Yahya Jammeh, focusing on those who bear the greatest responsibility for human rights violations.
Justice Minister Dawda Jallow said the Gambia will also ask for the extradition of Jammeh when the time for his trial comes.
Jammeh has been accused of a host of crimes during his more than two decades as leader of the West African country.
He now reportedly lives in exile in Equatorial Guinea, which has no extradition agreement with Gambia.
