The 2022 FIFA World Cup began on Sunday, November 20, 2022, in Doha, Qatar at the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar.
The event kicked off with an incredible opening ceremony that included fireworks, singing, and significance on Qatari culture.
The 30-minutes celebration focused on the theme “Unity” included performances by local and foreign artists, including Freeman Morgan of Hollywood.
Following the ceremony, the opening match of the competition was played between the host nation Qatar and Ecuador.
Ecuador won by 2-0 with Ecuador’s captain, Enner Valencia scoring both goals through penalty kick and an incredible header off across from Angelo Preciado respectively.
Bryt Fm Sports team covered the opening tournament from Dadi’s Bar at Koforidua which attracted many people from all walks of life to the bar to have a glimpse of the much anticipated football mundial in the world.
Surprisingly, the Qatari national team has previously failed to make it through the regular qualifying processes, so this was their first time taking part in the World Cup competition.
The little Gulf state may now compete against the best in international soccer thanks to FIFA, the sport’s governing body, which allows a host nation to participate in a World Cup without having to go through the qualifying stages.
Since playing its first official match in 1970, Qatar is a relatively newcomer to the sport, but the nation has developed the love for the game over the years.
The performance from the host nation was not encouraging and therefore their defeat does not come as a shock as some football lovers who came to Dadi’s bar were of the view that, the first game was not interesting as Qatar did not give the Ecuadorians a tough game.
Some projected with their performance, there is a possibility Qatar will lose all its games and end up last in the group.
Others were also hoping for an interesting tournament as they feel the real game starts Monday as Senegal come face to face with Netherlands at 4PM GMT.
Qatar is in Group A of the World Cup with Ecuador, Netherlands and Senegal.
Qatar will face African giants Senegal on November 25, 2022 at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.
