The Koforidua Circuit Court has granted bail to 39 suspects arrested during a police operation targeting drug peddling activities and unlawful assembly in Akyem Osiem on 26th February 2025.
The suspects, including farmers, traders, students, drivers, and unemployed individuals, were apprehended during a dawn raid led by ASP Johnson Adusei-Poku of the National Operations Unit in Accra.
The operation, which began at approximately 5:00 am, targeted locations notorious for drug peddling in Osiem, near Tafo-Akim.
During the exercise, police officers conducted searches and seized several exhibits, including dried plant materials suspected to be narcotic drugs, partly smoked weed, sachets of Timaking 120mg tablets, and other substances believed to be illegal drugs.
The accused persons; Dennis Oware aged 39. Farmer with exhibits to wit: 45 wraps of dried plant materials, partly smoked weed and small quatities of dried plant materiala suspected to be narcotic drugs.
Prince Adusei aged 20, unemployed was arrested with three sachets and one (1) tablet of Timaking 120mg together with three (3) plain ways of dried plant material all suspected to be narcotic drugs.
Seth Kwame Bath aged 44, Drummer, was also arrested with partly smoked weed suspected to be narcotic drug.
Other accused persons include Caleb Marfo Aged 35, driver; Adjei Lavrencia Aged 21, student of WSUST; Awuku Frank Aged 25. Farmer: Yaw Book Aged 34. Farmer: Kapal Marriet Aged 23. Okada Rider And Samuel Amankwaah, Aged 28 also an Okada Rider, were arrested at various “gettos” where they had gathered or assembled to engage conduct themselves in a manner likely to commit a breach of the peace.
All seized exhibits were photographed for evidential purposes, sealed in the presence of the suspects and an independent witness, and sent to the Forensic Laboratory in Accra for examination and analysis.
The accused persons were arraigned before the Koforidua High Court on March 5, which granted them bail as the police continue their probe into the matter.
However, the Police has been accused of abusing the suspects during the operation and also keeping them in custody beyond the stipulated 48 hours.
Also, residents say individuals who were filming and walking around were similarly arrested.
