The Acting Eastern Regional Director of the Department of Gender Mrs. Juliana Abbeyquaye has stated that any cultural practices which is a bias towards gender equality and for that matter infringes on the right of women should be abolished.
She explained that culture is supposed to protect the right of every individual irrespective of gender, but if there exists a cultural practice that is impeding the development and growth of women in society then it is better to eliminate such practices in order to ensure that there is gender equality in societies.
She said some cultures discriminate against the right and responsibilities of women regarding the type of work a woman should do and what a man also should do, she said prevents some women to take up higher positions.
She, therefore, urged that it is about time that Ghanaians discard the perception that women cannot take up certain positions and even lead in societies, saying equal opportunity should be given to anyone irrespective of gender.
Mrs. Juliana Abbeyquaye made this known during the celebration of International Women’s Day in Koforidua by the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) under the theme “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow Break the Bias”.
Mrs. Margaret Gbadago, who is the national Chairperson for Public Utility and Workers Union called for a serious remedy to increasing sexual harassment in homes, workplaces, and the sexual demands before a woman is offered a certain position.
She however said the older generation today should inculcate the spirit of gender equality in the young ones so that in some years to come there will be no more gender inequality in society.
Mr. Abraham Lincoln who is the Eastern regional council chairman of the Public Utility Workers Union also advised male workers to avoid bullying and discriminating against women who they work with but rather treat them as human beings who are capable of working equally as a man.
He said when an equal platform is given “we can excel in our workplaces and move the country forward”.
